Performance management and payroll for HeidelbergCement Group, Belgium

Project days: 225, turnaround: 13 months, consultants: 1

After HeidelbergCement Group failed in its attempt to migrate its payroll records to a new platform in early 2008, in April DWT Consulting was contracted as crisis manager to put things right and complete the migration by January 2009. Nine consultants worked full-time on the project between September 2008 and February 2009.

After a brief investigation, we started by setting up a new overview of all ‘technical’ project components and how they were interconnected. The project covered three groups of systems: Presta (Neomatics), E-HRM (Attentia) and SAP fi/co (implemented by HeidelbergCement Group Europe). These systems replaced a custom-built SAP-HR application, linked to a salary calculation by SD Worx.

All these application needed to be configured for the various HeidelbergCement Group sites, 12 different companies in all from various joint committees. It was precisely this combination of complexities, characterised by the need to link several applications to different salary processes of different salary managers, that made this project so challenging.

In late December 2008 the decision was taken to go live with the new solution at all companies, although a number of components still had to be implemented and tested in the opening months of 2009.

In January 2009 four payroll operations (people who had taken early retirement, advances for blue-collar staff, pay for all staff) were completed correctly. After a few tough months, in which the main problems related to corrections to earlier pay periods, the various applications and interfaces were stabilised.
The project was completed at the end of June 2009.
