Jan De Winter: background

Jan De Winter was awarded a licentiate in occupational, organisational and community psychology by K.U.Leuven. This degree course continues to be a foundation on which his expertise is built. It provided insights into group dynamics, organisation development and motivation theory that he has continually developed and improved every since.

After graduation, Jan began his career in the field of human resources. Jan was HR specialist and HR manager at Bank Card Company and Wolters Kluwer Belgium for around 12 years, working on a wide array of HR projects. The starting point has been always the integrated application of competency management in various HR processes.

In 2000 Jan De Winter completed an Executive MBA at UAMS. This two-year course provided extra insight into business management, marketing, production and finance. This know-how is a very valuable source to draw on when providing advice in all fields of business.

The first steps in knowledge management were taken at Wolters Kluwer Belgium, where the first attempt was made to change from traditional publisher to knowledge provider in 1999.

As part of his development in knowledge management, he assumed an external consultancy position with the switch to ICMS Group (Information Creation and Management Solutions), which is a small Belgian knowledge management pioneer, specialised in developing software solutions for unstructured information. ICMS Group successfully completed a number of knowledge management projects in that field, for such clients as Vanhout, Assurcard and Standaard Uitgeverij.

The immediate aftermath of 9/11 threw up some tough challenges for start-ups and early in 2002 Jan De Winter decided to return to the HR business. Nashuatec was looking for an HR manager with experience in document management to help establish a Document Management business unit.

He quickly assumed new responsibilities at Nashuatec, becoming HR manager for the sales organisation in Belgium and Luxembourg, and subsequently HR manager for the new NRG Document Management business unit for the whole of the Benelux.

Jan continued to focus on human resources at NRG until the acquisition of document management niche player Swets-Farrington, at which point he was appointed document management programme manager. His remit was three-fold: professionalising Nashuatec-Farrington service, integrating Farrington and developing solutions and services for human resources and higher education.

With the integration of Nashuatec in the Ricoh Groep early in 2008, Jan De Winter decided to become an independent consultant, establishing DWT Consulting bvba.

In 2008-2009 Jan De Winter returned to study at UAMS, this time in the Expert Class in Enterprise IT Architecture. Jan’s aim is to provide his practical experience in process analysis and automation with further academic underpinning.

At the end of 2009 Jan De Winter began a PhD on the problems of change management in relation to large IT projects, focussing on three questions:

  • How can we develop a vision on a project/company that is sufficiently supported and shared to ensure that all parties involved in the project/company have a clear understanding of the ambition we all want to achieve together?
  • How can we translate this ambition, which is primarily a functional description, in constructions in the field of organisation, information and technology, being the company’s constructional design domain?
  • How can we achieve a change in behaviour at organisational level that is consistent over the long term for the various parties involved and that focuses our actions on achieving the ambition?
Through projects for the government and private companies, Jan De Winter is working on a multi-employable, reproducible and learnable method that answers these key questions.
